On a regular Saturday afternoon in June 2025, 20-year-old surfer Dakota Briley was standing on the shoulder of Kamehameha Highway on Oahu’s North Shore, loading surfboards before a surf lesson near Chun’s Reef. Within seconds, everything changed.
An 18-year-old driver crossed into the oncoming lane, clipped a traffic sign, and slammed into Briley, pinning him between two vehicles. The injuries were catastrophic. His brother Ryder described the scene on Instagram shortly after: his ribs crushed, his spine broken in multiple places, the back of his skull fractured in over eight places, and everything from his hips down destroyed.
Dakota was airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition and placed in a medically induced coma.

Who Is Dakota Briley?
Dakota is the son of Shawn Briley, one of the most respected names in North Shore surfing history. Shawn made his name at Pipeline through the early and mid 1990s, earning a reputation as one of the heaviest chargers on the planet, praised directly by Gerry Lopez as one of the best Pipeline surfers he had ever seen.
Dakota was following that path. At 20, he was already carving a name for himself in the Pipeline lineup and riding guns shaped by family shaper Brett Marumoto and his uncle, the legendary Owl Chapman. He was also finishing his second year at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he surfed for the school team.
The Full Extent of His Injuries
The list of injuries reads like something no body should survive:
- Traumatic brain injury with multiple skull fractures
- Broken ribs and a ruptured lung
- Spinal cord damage across multiple vertebrae
- Compound fractures in both femurs
- Extensive fractures to his pelvis and lower body
His first major spinal surgery on June 17 alone lasted nearly eight hours. Doctors worked to rebuild sections of his vertebrae as surgeons tried to stop internal bleeding in both his brain and body. He went on to undergo a total of 11 surgeries over the following months.
The ICU Fight and First Signs of Life
Dakota spent 58 days at The Queen’s Medical Center, nearly all of it in a medically induced coma. His family, friends, and a growing crowd of supporters camped out and kept vigil throughout.
The first breakthrough came when Dakota came out of the coma and began whispering. His father Shawn described it as surreal. “It was just whispering at the beginning, which was incredible for us. He was able to communicate what he was feeling and what he was going through,” Shawn said. Soon the whispering became actual speech.
His first words from the hospital bed: “I love you all so much. It fills me with joy. Don’t forget, God loves you.”
His long-term memory was intact after waking, though he had no recollection of the months leading up to the accident.
Transfer to Craig Hospital in Colorado
In August 2025, Dakota was transferred to Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado, one of the country’s leading rehabilitation centers for spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. The move proved to be a turning point.
“His healing and progress has exponentially sped up since we arrived at Craig,” Shawn wrote in a public update. Dakota began eating solid foods, gained around 10 pounds, regained movement in his left arm and hand, and started holding full conversations with family and friends.
His sister Erin Lau described the shift: “After months of uncertainty, we get to celebrate answered prayers and see Dakota and talk to him.”
He started attending Sunday church services at the hospital, which quickly became the highlight of his week.
Where Dakota Briley Stands Today
As of early 2026, Dakota has moved out of Craig Hospital’s inpatient program and into its outpatient program. His father confirmed that most of his injuries are now medically stable.
The road ahead is still long. Dakota completes up to five therapy sessions per day, including walking therapy using robotic exoskeleton technology and electrical stimulation to help rebuild function in his lower body. He has also taken up pool therapy, and is preparing for a scuba experience at the Denver Aquarium arranged by Craig Hospital staff. The Briley family plans to remain in Colorado for several more months while treatment continues.
“The level of care is second to none,” Shawn said. “As long as he’s healing and getting stronger, we’re committed to staying there.”
Dakota has also expressed that when he recovers, he wants to return to Point Loma Nazarene University. And in an early video message from his hospital bed, he left one promise hanging in the air: “And one day I’ll be back in Hawaii.”

How the Surf Community Responded
The global surf world moved fast. A GoFundMe set up for Dakota’s medical and rehabilitation costs raised over $256,000. An online auction ran from September 6 to 15, 2025, featuring signed surfboards from Kelly Slater, John John Florence, Kai Lenny, and Jamie O’Brien, along with luxury hotel packages.
In February 2026, the Ke Nui Festival was held directly across from Pipeline on the North Shore, with all proceeds going toward Dakota’s ongoing care. “He’s an amazing, born and raised young man here on the North Shore,” said organizer Liam McNamara.
And in a moment that said everything about the Briley family’s character, Shawn addressed the young driver responsible publicly. “We’ve totally forgiven the kid who did this. We hold nothing against anybody.”
