Caroline Orzabal may not have been a household name, but her influence on one of British pop’s most successful bands runs deeper than most fans realize.
Born Caroline Johnston on October 4, 1962, in Bath, England, she became an integral part of the Tears for Fears story long before the band achieved international fame. Her condition progressively worsened over the following years. What began as depression evolved into alcohol-related dementia and cirrhosis. Roland became her full-time caregiver as her health deteriorated.
“Caroline was a little bit lax and naughty when she would see doctors,” Roland told The Guardian. “She would talk about menopause. She would talk about empty nest syndrome, and it wasn’t that at all.”
The situation placed enormous strain on both Caroline and the family. Roland has spoken openly about his own drinking during this period, acknowledging that his consumption likely made things worse.
A Loss That Inspired Art
Caroline passed away on July 24, 2017, at age 54 in Cambridgeshire, England. Her death from alcohol-related complications came while Tears for Fears was touring with Hall & Oates. The band immediately canceled remaining tour dates.
The grief Roland experienced became the foundation for Tears for Fears’ 2022 album The Tipping Point, their first new release in 17 years. Many songs on the album directly address Caroline’s illness and death.
“Please Be Happy” stands as perhaps the most personal track. Roland wrote the lyrics in 2019 but found them too painful to sing himself. Bandmate Curt Smith, who had known Caroline since they were all teenagers, performed the vocals instead.
“It’s raw emotion for me. I find it tough to listen to,” Roland admitted in interviews about the song.

Interestingly, Caroline’s illness and death helped repair the fractured relationship between Roland and Curt Smith. The two had parted ways in 1991 and only reunited in 2004, but tensions remained.

“Curt and I, we met Caroline at the same time. We were 13 or 14,” Roland recalled in a Yahoo Entertainment interview. “We used to hang out together in the Snow Hill flats where Curt lived in Bath.”
Moving Forward While Remembering
After Caroline’s death, Roland eventually found love again. In 2020, he married photographer and writer Emily Rath. The couple welcomed a child in September 2025.
But Caroline’s legacy remains embedded in Tears for Fears’ music. The Tipping Point received widespread acclaim upon its February 2022 release, with critics praising its emotional honesty and depth.
